A country-music dream team is scheduled to hit Angel Stadium on Saturday night, as Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw bring their Brothers of the Sun tour to Anaheim. Pop & Hiss caught up with McGraw last week for a field report.
You and Kenny have been out together for a few weeks now. Learn anything new about him?
Well, we've been friends for 20 years. Before we had record deals, we used to stay at each other's apartment when one or the other of us didn't have electricity. So I'm not sure there's anything I don't know about Kenny at this point. But I will say that his focus is something that continues to impress me.
Most of the Brothers of the Sun dates are in stadiums, which not many acts are playing anymore.
I'll admit it: I can't remember how many times I've seen two guys at the top of their game able to go out and do shows this big.
Elton John and Billy Joel come to mind.
I'll take that comparison.
Your new single, "Truck Yeah," uses the word "truck" in place of a naughtier term.
It's having some fun with words, yeah. But the thing about this record is that I just wanted to go into the studio and cut a track that tore your face off ' like, "Damn, that is rockin'."
Will there be more rock-informed stuff on your next album?
Maybe. I always try to put you on a roller coaster, where if you listen from start to finish, there's some twists, some elements you didn't expect.
"Emotional Traffic," from earlier this year, contained a duet with Ne-Yo.
I think of R&B and country as kissing cousins. That's why I like Lionel Richie so much.
You and your wife, Faith Hill, sold your home in Los Angeles in 2010. Do you still spend much time here?
With three daughters in school [in Nashville], we're not out there much. Movie projects are always floating around, but right now I've got this tour and a record coming out, so I'm not sure if I'll have time for any of them. The main thing, though, is the kids: When you've got girls starting high school and trying to be independent, you want to be around as much as possible.
